Lafayette Cook Book (1922)

About the Book

A BLAST FROM THE PAST

In 1922, the female congregants of the First United Methodist Church of Lafayette (then known as the Methodist Episcopal Church South) gathered together their best recipes, as well as those of their neighbors. Under the direction of Ruth Ryan, who taught Home Economics at Southwestern Louisiana Institute (which is now the University of Louisiana at Lafayette), the recipes were tested and then printed in this collection. Local businesses paid for advertisements throughout the pages, sponsoring the printing.

As a result, this cookbook is a time capsule of life for many in Lafayette in 1922. Yet until this reprinting, only two copies of the book were known to exist anywhere in the country.

This new printing celebrates Lafayette's rich culinary history and highlights a simpler time, when home cooks used only locally available ingredients  and passed down recipes through generations of family. Find within these pages such recipes as Normandy Salad, Oyster Gumbo, Bell Pepper Relish, and Molasses Drop Cake.
